It turned out to be a good day weather-wise although the competition was fierce! The organisers were worried in the morning that the tournament would have to be cancelled, but by lunchtime the rain had stopped and play could commence and the event organiser Vic Albin could breathe a sigh of relief.

This year the Woolton Group Golf Competition was again held at Woolton Golf Club and attracted 26 players and more joined them for the evening diner. The competition is an individual Stableford, full handicap.

The first group of golfers to tee off were members of the Woolton Golf club and this year they fielded a strong team comprising Ray Erskine (president), Ted Roberts, Dave McCann and Graham Sinden, Chairman of the Woolton Group Golf Society (WGGS). Old Lerpoolian Lodge No 9272, Toxteth Lodge No 1356 and City Lodge No 2514 were all represented together with two guest teams representing Tithebarn.

By 5:30 the majority of golfers had returned and handed in their cards which, this year, were checked by Albert Kirby.

After a change of clothes and a swift drink, members and visitors were asked to take their seats in the dining room where Graham Sinden, chairman of WGGS, welcomed everyone and thanked them for their support. He did mention that he had had an off day and his putting could have been improved upon, but we won’t dwell on that. The assembled then tucked into chef’s homemade steak and kidney pie followed by Eton mess, coffee and mints.

The loyal toast was given by Woolton Group Chairman Andy Whittle and then Graham proposed the toast to the Woolton Golf Club thanking them for providing an excellent course although a bit slow due to the morning rain.

In response, the President of Woolton Golf Club, Ray Erskine, reminded everyone that it was nearly 10 years ago when a very well respected Alfred Geoffrey Hirst, member of City Lodge and Woolton Golf Club was asked to present the idea of the Woolton Masons moving into the golf club to the board and thus was borne a strong relationship. Ray also thanked Albert Kirby for keeping the scores.

During the evening a raffle was held which raised the sum of £285 for group funds. The President of WGGS, Kevin Poynton was called upon to present the prizes and the winners are as follows.

Ray Cardy won the President’s Trophy; the Cyril Smith Team trophy for the best Woolton Group team was won by Old Lerpoolian Lodge consisting of Ric Thompson, David Antonia, David Chestnut and Nick Holmes with a score of 93, the runners-up being City Lodge comprising of Geoff and Peter Johnston and Ken Smith with a score of 91.

Ray Cardy won the Geoffrey Hirst memorial Trophy for the best group front 9. Noel’s Cup, in memory of Noel Hawkes, was won by Geoff Johnston. Prize for guest winner went to Ray Erskine and Ian Jones. A Guest team winner was won by Woolton Golf Club. The prize for the longest drive went to John Fox and prize for nearest to the pin was won by Ray Cardy.

There was a buzz going around the Geoffrey Hirst Masonic Suite at Woolton Golf Club as brethren assembled to install a new master. In his usual relaxed and festive style, Assistant Provincial Grand Master Kevin Poynton made his acquaintance known to the brethren. He had a few words with the installing master who told him he was somewhat nervous and Kevin put him at ease by saying he had nothing to worry about as he would give him every assistance.

Kevin, accompanied by grand officer John Lee, together with acting Provincial grand officers, Gordon Sandford Provincial Grand Sword Bearer and Tom Arnold Provincial Assistant Grand Standard Bearer processed into the lodge. Kevin was formally greeted by the WM who asked him to take the gavel of the lodge. Salutations to Kevin, followed by salutations to other grand officers John Lee, Peter Rawlinson and Any Whittle were given. Ron Everard took the salute on behalf of the Provincial grand officers present.

It was at this point that Malcolm presented a cheque to Kevin for £400 for the West Lancashire Freemasons’ Charity. Kevin was extremely pleased to receive the cheque and on behalf of the recipients who benefit from the monies thanked the lodge for its donation.

After the first rising the Provincial Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies formed the recession and Kevin, accompanied by other grand officers and acting Provincial grand officers retired. The lodge was then closed in due form and solemn prayer. Some 35 brethren then adjourned to the dining room for refreshment.

In response to the toast to his health, Kevin reminded the diners that this was a significant year for Freemasons the forthcoming West Lancashire Masonic Charitable Foundation 2021 Festival and tercentenary celebrations were an ideal opportunity to showcase Freemasonry to the world and the festival would hopefully raise a magnificent sum to assist the charities. The last time that West Lancashire had a festival in 2010, a sum of £5,300,000 was raised for the benefit of the charities.

The charity stewards and festival representatives of the Woolton Group of Freemasons met in the Geoffrey Hirst Masonic Suite to receive a presentation on the forthcoming MCF 2021 Festival.

Woolton Group charity and festival representatives listen attentively.

Woolton Group charity and festival representatives listen attentively.

Assistant Provincial Grand Master David Winder, who is Vice President of the Festival accompanied by members of his team, Geoff Saul (festival secretary) and Derek Rooney (regional charity steward) gave a detailed background on the format of the festival. Also present to listen to the talk was Woolton Group APrGM Kevin Poynton, Woolton Group Chairman Andy Whittle, Woolton Group Vice Chairman Mike Cunliffe and Woolton Group Charity and Festival Steward Gary Devlin who has been newly appointed.

Andy Whittle opened the proceedings by welcoming the brethren and introduced the guest speakers. Derek Rooney, with the help of a PowerPoint presentation, then provided important information for the group representatives. He outlined the importance of a festival saying we were the first Province to participate and the Provincial Grand Master Tony Harrison had been delighted to accept the invitation of the newly formed Masonic Charitable Foundation to arrange a festival in support of their work and for our Province to have the privilege of being the first to be invited by them to do so.

Festival jewel proudly being worn.

Festival jewel proudly being worn.

As part of the training being provided the audience were informed that the Province of West Lancashire has a fine heritage of giving and supporting charitable causes both Masonic and non-Masonic and especially those who find themselves in need. David Winder reminded the brethren that this Province gave £5,300,000 in 2010 and to date has received back in excess of £6,000,000, so we are a net receiver and in the four years that this festival is to run it is important to pledge our support. David continued by saying that in no way was this a hard sell, far from it.

Every brother who pledges support to the festival in the form of a one-off payment or by direct debits over the four years and reaches the patronage amounts will be sent a Festival Jewel. The hope is that everyone will wear their Stewards Jewel with pride.

Training continued by instructing representatives on how direct debits should be completed and how they should be forwarded to the Provincial office together with information on the envelope scheme.

At the end of the training session Derek and David showed the brethren the very attractive Festival Jewel featuring the Province of West Lancashire’s coat of arms. Other merchandise is available from the Provincial shop which is on the Provincial website; http://www.westlancsfreemasons.org.uk/provincial-shop/

All profits will be put into the festival account. Together it shows that we ‘do’ make a difference and we should be proud to wear the Festival Jewel.

The DC informed the WM that the ceremony of installation was concluded. Hearing this was Derek’s cue to rise and bring the congratulations and best wishes of the PrGM Tony Harrison and in so doing Derek congratulated all who had taken part in the ceremony. Derek continued by saying that Tony Harrison hoped that all the brethren would continue to enjoy their Freemasonry.

Steve Ashcroft had the pleasant task of presenting a cheque, on behalf of the lodge, to Derek who received it with great pleasure informing the brethren that the cheque was for £250 in favour of the West Lancashire Freemasons Charity. Derek thanked the lodge brethren on behalf of the charity and those who would benefit from it.

The secretary read the communications from Grand Lodge and then the DC formed the recession for Derek and other grand officers, headed by acting Provincial grand officer Tom Arnold. After the second rising the DC requested that all Provincial grand officers and visitors were to retire. After the lodge was closed brethren gathered in the dining room for an exceptional meal of lentil soup, steak pie and chips, followed by spotted dick and custard. An excellent evening was enjoyed by all.

Group chairman ‘shepherded’ to lunch

What, I hear you ask, is a dog doing attending the Woolton Group Sunday carvery? Every six months the group holds a Sunday lunch carvery and on this occasion, some 70 people, plus a dog, supported the event.

Gary Devlin and Preston.

Gary Devlin and Preston.

To answer the question the dog is named Preston, a German Shepherd, and is a disability support dog. In fact, Gary Devlin, the group’s charity steward, trains these dogs for blind people and Preston was on his final socialisation training before being handed over the following morning to his new owner.

In fact, if you hadn’t seen Preston you wouldn’t know he was there, he sat by Gary’s side without a sound throughout the whole of the luncheon. To ensure we complied with all regulations at the Golf Club their permission was sought prior to the day and they were happy to support Gary in his endeavours.

Anyway, let’s move on to the Sunday carvery. The Woolton Group Chairman Andy Whittle welcomed everyone saying that he hoped they would enjoy the event during which there would be raffle and details of the beneficiary would be given later. Stephen Joseph Riley and his son Stephen James Riley would sell the raffle tickets during the meal.

The DC for the day was Stephen Joseph Riley and he requested the group vice chairman Mike Cunliffe to say grace. The chef had arranged for the carvery to be served in the small dining room to give his staff some extra space when serving the soup, dessert and coffee.

Following a delightful meal, the DC requested Mike Cunliffe to return thanks and the loyal toast was given by Andy Whittle.

Steve Riley then started the raffle by requesting that Amanda Whittle draw the first ticket which was won by Tom Arnold. As there were plenty of raffle prizes, the draw took a little time to complete.

Once everybody had settled down again, Andy Whittle explained that he and his wife had visited Tithebarn earlier in the year and were extremely impressed with what they saw. He had consulted with the group’s executive officers and a decision had been made that all proceeds from Woolton Group events would be donated to Tithebarn to support a project.

This project was to build a summer house for the dementia wing patients. This was greeted by rapturous applause and continued when Andy informed people that the raffle had raised the sum of £365, a very good start for the project. In conclusion, Andy reminded people that the next Sunday lunch was scheduled for 9 April 2017 and that the social committee were planning a Black Tie Dinner in the New Year.

Prince’s Park Lodge No 4769 was granted it’s warrant in 1925 and currently has 20 members. Although a small lodge, the warmth and sincerity is felt as you walk into the temple. As is their custom, they install their new master every November without exception.

The lodge DC Andrew Mooney asked brethren to stand to receive the WM Vic Albin and his wardens. Having taken their seats, Vic opened the lodge in the first degree and the minutes of the last regular meeting were confirmed and signed. The DC retired and on his return announced that Sam Robinson seeks admission, accompanied by Howard Jones PDPrGM, Haldene Eccles, Chairman of Woolton Group Andy Whittle, vice chairman Mike Cunliffe and acting Provincial Grand Sword Bearer Gordon Sandford.

Vic warmly welcomed Sam Robinson who responded by saying that it was nice to be among friends. Past masters were requested by Vic to assist for the remainder of the ceremony and the lodge was opened to the second degree. Douglas Gregson and Ron Richards presented the master elect Peter William Williams who had occupied the chair on two previous occasions, 2004 and 2007. Peter reaffirmed his obligation and Vic opened the lodge to the third degree.

Howard Jones, was saluted and duly responded; this was followed by salutations to grand officers Haldene Eccles, Sam Robinson and Andy Whittle. Vic Albin was saluted and responded on behalf of all the Provincial grand officers present.

Vic asked that all the officers and brethren of the lodge line up in the north where he thanked very sincerely for all the work and support they had given him during his year of office saying that it had been a pity that they had not had a candidate but had kept themselves busy rehearsing various ceremonies. Vic also expressed his thanks and those of his wife Beryl for making the Ladies Evening such a memorable one.

All below the rank of a past master were requested to withdraw from the lodge and during their absence Vic installed his successor. Master Masons were readmitted, saluted the newly installed master and Graham Sinden presented the working tools. Peter closed the lodge to the second degree, admitted fellow craft Freemasons who duly saluted him and Peter received the explanation of the working tools from John Riding. Peter closed the lodge to the first degree, admitted entered apprentice Freemasons and after saluting him had the working tools explained by Geoffrey Cowan.

Peter Williams then appointed and invested his officers for the ensuing year. The placing addresses to the wardens were given by Douglas Gregson; to the deacons by John Riding; the inner guard by Andrew Mooney; the tyler by Stanley Bradley and the steward by John Riding.

Vic Albin then delivered the address to the master in a sincere and confident manner. Andrew Mooney provided the address to the wardens and Sam Robinson presented the address to the brethren of the lodge. Shortly after Vic had pleasure in saying to the newly installed master that the ceremony of installation was concluded. This was Sam Robinson’s cue to rise and convey greetings and thanks from the Provincial Grand Master Tony Harrison for Peter taking the chair of the lodge for the third time. He hoped he would have an enjoyable year in office and he also hoped that all the brethren would continue to enjoy their Freemasonry. Sam also congratulated the brethren who had taken part in the ceremony especially Vic Albin and Andrew Mooney.

Peter Williams then had a most pleasant task to perform by presenting two cheques. The first was for £200 in favour of the West Lancashire Freemasons Charity and the second for £300 for the Freemasons’ Grand Charity. Sam thanked the lodge members for their donations on behalf of the charities and also on behalf of the recipients of those charities who we never meet.

Andrew Mooney formed the recession after the first rising and grand officers and acting Provincial grand officers retired. The lodge was then closed in due form after the second and third risings and all the brethren retired to the dining room to partake of refreshment to celebrate what had been a thoroughly good evening.

To all Brethren of the Province                                                                                                                                 November 2016

Dear Brethren

The new season is now in full swing and I have no doubt that you are back in your lodges enjoying that new beginning. As we start this season – one which embraces the Tercentenary Year of Grand Lodge and the commencement of our 2021 Festival on behalf of the Masonic Charitable Foundation. I am writing to you to keep you up to date with what is happening in our great Province to celebrate the Tercentenary of Freemasonry.

Tony Bent.

Service of Celebration

We had originally planned to hold this service at Liverpool Cathedral and it was publicised as such. However, after two discussions with the Vice Dean, it became ever more apparent that they were only willing to “fit us in “ to Choral Evensong. Our service, designed and intended to confirm and celebrate 300 years of Grand Lodge, would not sit easily with traditional Choral Evensong. It was felt by myself and the Provincial Grand Chaplain, who accompanied me, that the Brethren, who would attend this service together with their wives/partners, would be left feeling that their expectations of this Celebration would be unfulfilled. Equally, members of the public present for evensong may well feel nonplussed at the Masonic references in that service.

Consequently, alternative arrangements have been made and, following extensive discussions over many weeks,  there are now to be two Services of Celebration to be held on consecutive Sundays as follows:-

Sunday 26 February 2017 at the Priory, Lancaster at 3.00 pm

Sunday 5 March 2017 at St Elphin’s Church, Warrington at 3.00 pm

As can be seen from the venues, we have taken travelling into account by organising the services to cater for the northern and the southern parts of the Province; given the time of the year, the services will permit a greater number of Masons to travel a shorter distance to support this element of our celebrations.

Brethren, there is one item concerning these services which I must draw to everyone’s attention and that is the question of regalia. Since the services are to be arranged to celebrate 300 years of Grand Lodge, it is the express wish of the Provincial Grand Master that only Craft regalia is to be worn and that Grand and Provincial Grand Officers wear full dress regalia.

Historical pageant

This pageant outlining the historical development of Freemasonry, which has been devised by Frank Davies and colleagues in the St Helens and Prescot Group, will be advertised throughout the Province and Groups or individual Lodges will be able to invite the players to inform and entertain them by offering a historical “daily advancement in Masonic knowledge”.

Frank Davies’ email address is:frdloyalty@outlook.com

Gala Dinner

hilton-blackpool-hotelThe final details of the Gala Dinner to be held at The Hilton, Blackpool on Saturday 25 November  2017 have yet to be completed however, full information on that final event to close the Tercentenary Year in West Lancashire will be provided to all groups early in the new year.

There are so many ways in which the Tercentenary Year is to be celebrated in West Lancashire that I can only advise you to visit the Provincial website www.wlmasons.org.uk/tercentenary-home-page to see what is on in your group and in neighbouring groups. The only certainty of this very full diary is that we in West Lancashire are intent on making the 300 years of Grand Lodge a very memorable event throughout the calendar year of 2017.

Finally, Brethren, I would wish to place on record in this Newsletter, my grateful thanks to those colleagues who have worked with me as members of the Tercentenary Committee. They have all volunteered to help, their input to our planning meetings has been invaluable and, although each is a very busy man and Mason, they have been unstinting in their support; I deeply appreciate all they have done and have no hesitation in expressing my gratitude to each and every one.

May I extend my best wishes to each of you in all your Masonic endeavours in the coming year.

Warmest fraternal regards

Tony Bent
